If I have learned anything in these past 33 months of writing weekly, it is that chasing inspiration is a waste of time. It is like a little mouse; it comes and goes in silence and then sneaks through the tiniest cracks when I am paying attention.
Creativity is a process and like anything worth doing, to be creative takes practice and patience. It isn’t about being “good” at painting or throwing pots, writing or skydiving. It is about knowing you can so that when you feel stuck somewhere or with something, you have a way out. Get creative, be creative!
What I have come to learn is that cultivating creativity is a skill that requires consistent practice no matter what is going on in my life. When I let my creative juices slow to a winter molasses like crawl, I lose energy, drive, commitment, and most of all, I lose joy.
Inspiration comes and goes, shows up when you lease expect it and runs when you try to chase it. What I have come to know, is that inspiration shows up in most every place I am when I am ready for it… in the voice of a doctor on Grey’s Anatomy, in a character line of a Hallmark movie like The Blessing Bracelet, through an audiobook like Greenlights or a billboard alongside the freeway.
Creativity is something you can call on at any time. The more you embrace your creativity, the more inspiration will show up to keep your creative juices flowing. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” What I say is that, “your imagination is your only limit!”
Cultivating creativity is like tending to a delicate garden within your mind, requiring patience, diligence, and a willingness to embrace both the blossoms and the weeds.
Explore new avenues of creativity, follow inspiration when you “see” it, indulge in the unknown, and stretch the boundaries of your comfort zone. Your life may just unfold like the bloom on a rose. Turn your imagination loose, throw open the barn doors and release your creative soul.
