The In-Between Times, No Regrets, Only Resets, The Sacred Pivot

The In-Between Times

The In-Between TimesHave you ever noticed that life often happens in those times between celebrations and when the stuff hits the fan? It has been a crazy several months in our lives and I am breathing through one of those spaces in between…

Much of what I truly need to come back to me is found outside my office door under a cloud-filled sky and alongside my cottonwood tree. When I can, I get in the car and drive, the wide-open landscape or the sound of running water refueling the empty spaces in me.

I find a very different sense of “me” when I am walking in the woods or even just down a tree lined street. Walking isn’t as easy as it used to be and it takes time for me to move past the body and into my body-mind for that shift in consciousness that opens the pathway for a conversation with the trees, the water, the rocks, or the wildflowers. I am sure I would make an episode of America’s Funniest Home Videos if I were caught carrying on a conversation with a raven, our voices echoing each other in a choreographed chorus of back-and-forth rhetoric.

Surrounded by other living beings, both bigger and smaller than me, I remember that I am simply one form of “being” in this vast Universe and it simplifies whatever struggles I have bumped up against.

In the space between the celebrations and the muck, there can be no regrets, only resets. You know, the sacred pivot I have written about. Being in nature reminds me that even when I am lonely, I am never alone, and the rhythm of the Earth nourishes my soul.

Under the stars when the wind kisses my cheeks, I remember me and make that sacred pivot from yesterday’s worries and tomorrow’s what ifs, and I remember that I am a part of Mother Nature just as are the leaves on my cottonwood trees as they whisper in the wind.

When I take the time to look around, even if it is just out my window at the cherry tree or the young oak trees, my mood changes like a sunlit blue sky emerging from the depths of a dark and turbulent gray one. My thoughts, like those billowing clouds change with the wind, passing through my mind and often just disappearing without taking hold or leaving even a trace of conjecture or conclusion.

When I let myself move from “what’s next” into what is, right here and now, in the space between the leaves and the words, even the passing cars become a brief wind instead of annoyance (the motorcycles, the crash of thunder) and in that moment is the sacred pivot.

May you be tickled by the wind, kissed by the rain, shadowed by a billowing cloud on a sunny day and find solace in the comfort of nature wherever you may be.
