“Life is not a problem to be solved but rather a mystery to be lived.”
~From Chinese Fortune Cookie
Today my husband Danny turned 78.
I am feeling blessed to have spent a lifetime with this man. It has been a journey of ups and downs, laughter and tears, challenges and victories. He was 21 when we met face to face for the first time. I was one day past my 19th birthday. He was just home from Viet Nam. I was between freshman and sophomore years in college. He was a cowboy. I loved horses. We met in ‘68. We married in ‘72. The rest is history as they say.
You can imagine that in our nearly 60 years together, the world, our family, and our relationship has changed over and over and over again.
The quote above came to me last week while we were in Arizona eating at our favorite Chinese Restaurant, The Sesame Inn. It is the perfect metaphor for our life now and perhaps even for our world.
I think it is a wonderful reminder that life, with all its twists and turns, those sacred pivots, is not something to be “fixed” or “figured out” but experienced with an open heart, courage, patience, strength, humility, and love.
When I let go of my need for all the answers, I begin to live more fully present in my days. I see the world with fresh eyes that can take in the little things, those surprises that pop up when I least expect them are the ones that slip away when I get caught up in the everyday busy of my world and how to manage it.
My challenge to you all this week, as you traverse the “bers” (Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec) and “blurs” of the holidays on your way to the end of this wild and crazy year, is to view life as a spiritual adventure.
It is not one about perfection and finding all the answers but rather a journey that embraces the unknown and allows you to trust that you are exactly where you need to be at every moment along the way.
Consider every sacred twist and pivot, every up and down as an invitation to learn more about yourself, your world, and the divine energy that connects us all. Set yourself up to thrive in 2025.
Munch on these ideas:
EMBRACE UNCERTAINTY – remind yourself it is ok not to know, for that unknown holds the seeds of coming possibilities and perhaps the answers you seek will even blossom in ways you can’t even imagine.
STAY PRESENT – Let the future come on its own terms and don’t get hung up in the past. Be here now and live life’s mysteries as they are revealed in every moment, not planned or overthought into existence.
TRUST THE PROCESS – You are not lost if you do not have all the answers. Each step along the way is guiding you through wisdom and growth.
CULTIVATE CURIOSITY – When a challenge pops up or a problem derails your day, view them with curiosity and ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” You may find that what frustrates you the most is one of your greatest teachers.
CELEBRATE THE JOURNEY – Every day, week, month, every stage in your life has value, even the difficult ones. Celebrate YOU and your resilience, your ability to grow and your willingness to keep moving forward through the mystery and uncertainty.
Life is an adventure, embrace the mystery and live it!
Here’s to more joy, wisdom, peace, purpose and growth through the “bers” and birthdays,
Happy Birthday Danny!!!
