Winter Solstice and the Coming of Christmas

  • by
A Solstice Prayer

A Solstice PrayerTomorrow is the winter “Solstice” (a word that comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning Standing Still Sun) The Winter Solstice, is the longest night of the year, and calls us to pause and honor the quiet stillness of the dark.

It is a time to slow down, to embrace the mystery of the unknown, and to rest. It is a time of introspection, reflection, and the promise of the returning light.

The darkness, in its quiet solitude, holds immense power. It is a fertile void where seeds can be sown, dreams can be nurtured, and where you can find your quiet, contemplative strength.

As the Solstice marks the turning of the year, it also heralds the returning light. Minute by minute, the days begin to stretch forward, a gentle reminder that no matter how deep the darkness, the light always returns. This cyclical rhythm mirrors the truth of our lives: periods of shadow are not only inevitable but necessary for growth, transformation, and renewal.

The returning light is a promise, a beacon of hope that carries us into the coming season of celebration and gratitude as we welcome the LIGHT and celebrate the birth of Divine Love.

Christmas arrives, steeped in the themes of faith, hope, and oneness. For many, it is a celebration of that Divine Love made manifest—a moment to recognize the Light within us and in the world. Christmas invites us all to embody generosity, compassion, and unity. It is a season where boundaries soften, hearts open, and we are reminded of our shared humanity.

The Solstice and Christmas together offer a profound metaphor: the balance of dark and light, of endings and beginnings, of faith and hope. They teach us that in the stillness of the darkest night, we can plant the seeds of our highest intentions. And as the light returns, we are called to nurture these seeds with faith; faith in ourselves, in each other, and in the unfolding of life’s great mysteries.

So as the Winter Solstice welcomes the returning Light and Christmas invites us to celebrate it, let us hold faith in the journey, hope in the future, and love for every being, everywhere. Let us find joy in the balance of dark and light, grace in the quiet spaces where transformation begins, and joy in the celebrations that fill the season with love, light, and laughter… family, friends, and fellowship.

In this sacred season, may you remember that you are the light returning—and that when we all come together, we shine.

May your celebration of the return of the light and this season of holidays draw deep from the abundant joy, fierce hopes and enduring traditions of all our ancestors.
