Living Attentively

“Living reflectively is deep work. Living attentively is deep prayer.” ~ Stephanie Duncan Smith. I love this quote, and it just felt like the perfect place to begin this Friday’s message.

This week I was blessed to spend some rare one-on-one time with both my grandsons. The oldest, 16 now, came over to help me set up a new minicomputer… now that was an exercise in patience and cord control. It’s always fun to be in their world for a while. I think it keeps me connected to the “now” in a very special way. And he’s driving, yikes, where did the years go. I can call him to take me to the store now instead of the other way around. Being in the car is such a great way to have conversations.

Yesterday, I was gifted some time with the youngest when I picked him up from guitar lessons. We had a great chat about guitars and music. We ended up at my house instead of his to dig my old clarinet out of storage for him to see. It’s about 62 years old now. I was so frustrated when it seemed that the case was locked. I don’t think I ever locked it in all the years I played. Something clicked in a distant memory as I was watching Jace try to pick the lock. Don’t lift, I felt somewhere out there, twist.

Had a great laugh over that one. I had even called his mom to see if she knew where the keys were. She played for a couple of years.

I let my guitar of many years and songs ago, go to a friend that did music for his church. I kept my daughters smaller one as it was hers. Turns out when her youngun’ asked to take guitar lessons, the kids version is a might small for him, so he uses his instructor’s guitar for lessons.

I did something I have never done before, I asked in Nextdoor if anyone had an old guitar they’d like to sell or find a new strummer for. I got the most wonderful note from a woman who is clearing “clutter” and was just as thrilled as I was to find a home with a kid for the guitar she learned to play on. Turns out it is about 50 years old and in awesome condition, and now grandson #2 has a full-sized guitar to learn on, and it didn’t break the bank. Thank you Jody.

Amazing how giddy a grandma can get when she has quality time with the grandkids sans screens in their face. What a joyful week.

Patience came to visit me along with the boys. She is rather sly in her persistence that I slow down and pay attention. My IT guy got into the minicomputer and got the things that baffled me taken care of and showed me how to do the rest. Turns out I had downloaded Microsoft 365 in every language it comes in. That was fun…deleting them one at a time and trying to figure out which button to push. Finally figured out if I did French first, I kinda got it and then did Spanish, and kinda got it. Click the blue button each time.😊

Now I am off to read a book grandson #2 shared with me when I gave him the rest of the Black Stallion books I had here for him. It is called A Horse Named Sky. I am loving reading this story in the voice of a newborn foal as he describes sights, scents, relatives in the herd, and getting his name. That’s as far as I have gotten, but what a kick to read something written in other than a human’s voice.

Strumming my way into the weekend filled with gratitude.
