Accepting the Unexpected

Facing the Storm

You can make all the plans you want, plot them down to a T. Then something bigger comes along and just blows your plan right out the window.

It could be a downpour or a tornado, sprinkles or a windstorm. It could be a virus that sneaks into your body uninvited.

It’s the way you act when you see how small you really are in comparison that shows you how well you know yourself. Your actions are the only way to know yourself, in each moment, in the face of the storms that are different for each of us.

This past week has been a bit of a storm and last night I sat outside with puddles drying and sprinkles of raindrops dotting the sidewalks. I love the smell of rain. I love standing in the rain, feeling the soft water on my skin, the gentle breeze across my face.

I once got caught in a downpour leaving class way back in my college days. It was a bit of a hike to the parking lot and like everyone around me, I started running through the pouring rain. It didn’t take me long, even back then, to realize what a gift this storm was.

As I slowed down, already soaked to the bone, I vividly remember thinking what a wonderful way to wash away the day. Inhale fresh air and simply feel into the beauty of the pouring rain as I made my way to the car.

The thing is, you can look back on the “storms” that have chased you or the ones you chased in life, and see what messages they might hold for you, or you can look forward to the next one with open arms and an umbrella tucked someplace handy if you think you will need it.

The next storm might show up as some news you aren’t ready for or a fear you never thought you’d have to face. Perhaps it’s a chance you never imagined you’d take.

Truth is, you will never know what your own storm is, until it starts raining.

Storms are like a gift… sometimes a wonderful surprise and others a tumultuous thundering of the unexpected, a reminder to think about what really matters.
