Love Ripples Forward

Love Ripples Forward

There’s a quiet magic in being a grandparent, standing at the edge of their growing-up years, watching them stretch into their own lives while still hugging them every chance I get.

This week I spent an afternoon with my youngest grandson shopping for his very first guitar. His excitement hummed through the air like a song not yet written. The joy in his eyes, the excitement in his hands as he tested the strings, reminded me of how thrilling “firsts” can be.

I taught him how to “play” the kazoo and he shared stories about his ‘crazy’ (his words) goats and the wild bleating, tongue hanging out, annoying, runaway, trying to tame to walk nice for shows, goats. Talk about a car full of laughter that made this grandma’s day.

Later, my oldest called and came over just to talk. Sixteen and thoughtful, he wanted to share a piece of his world, his week, and his heart. Now, taller than me and growing quickly into manhood, he reminded me that the bridge between generations is built not of words alone, but of listening, building trust, and time well spent together. I listened (mostly), knowing how rare these moments can be.

Being a grandparent is a living reminder that our love ripples forward. You see the best of what you’ve poured into the world reflected back, sometimes with a solemn face with sparkling, joy-filled eyes, sometimes through the voice of a kazoo, and always with grace.

Being a grandparent has taught me patience, how to be present with each moment shared, and gifted me with new perspectives. Times are different from when I was a child or when my children were growing up. The world is changing.

I think grandparenting is the art of standing just far enough back to let them find their rhythm (that should be in a parenting manual), yet close enough to let them feel the steady heartbeat of your belief in who they are becoming.

This wise woman knows being a grandparent is one of life’s sweetest honors. It’s more than a title, it’s a sacred relationship that invites you to witness life renewing itself through laughter and tears, curiosity and clarity, and the unfiltered wonder and joy of their youth.

The joy of being a “Grand” isn’t about gray hair or age, it’s about presence, laughter, and a love that echoes through generations. This week I was invited to hold space for their becoming while I celebrated the joy of simply walking beside boys becoming men…good men. I am so proud. This is for them:

TODAY GIVE ME THE HEART TO KNOW WHAT FEELS RIGHT.
THE MIND TO ARGUE IF IT DOESN’T,
AND THE GUT TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO FROM THERE.
~Matthew McConaughey, Poems and Prayers

May you all languish in the joy of each generation you are gifted to know…
