Turbulence, Taxes, and Take-Out

Turbulence, Taxes, and Takeout

We are living in turbulent times; there is no denying it. The world feels messy, noisy, uncertain, and more demanding than many of us would like. Even in our personal lives, the list of what must be handled daily keeps growing.

Worry and concern pull at my thoughts for what little good that will do. Responsibilities crowd my calendar, and somewhere in the middle of it all, tax season arrives asking me to spend countless hours gathering receipts, sorting out numbers, and trying to make sense of the math of my life.

Yet Spring still comes; soft, colorful, magnificent in all her glory. The trees do not refuse to bud because the world is unsettled. Wildflowers aren’t waiting for perfect conditions so they might bloom, they bloom in spite of it all.

The light lingers a little longer in the evening sky as birds return to their songs, and the earth quietly reminds me that renewal does not ask permission from anything or anyone. It simply begins.

Perhaps that is part of the invitation before me now. I am being invited not to ignore what is difficult, not to pretend upheaval is not real, but to remember that beauty and possibility are also always present to the watchful heart.

Life continues to offer me small moments of grace, even while I am adding columns, re-checking figures, and wondering if I missed a form somewhere along the way.

There is something almost sacred in bringing a bit of kindness and humor to what feels tedious. Taxes may not stir my soul, they quite literally do the opposite, but perhaps take-out will help.

A favorite meal spread across the kitchen counter, a good pen (with erasable ink) in hand, a calculator nearby, and the simple decision not to make the task harder than it already is. That too is wisdom whispered across Panda Express.

Sometimes navigating these grown-up responsibilities (for one who swore off growing up at about 10), calls for equal parts discipline and delight. I do what must be done, then watch Survivor and eat a peanut butter cup or three. I tend to my spirit along with the taxes as I pray for peace and envision an end to the turbulence.

There may be bills, deadlines, and difficult headlines, but there is also laughter, lilacs, warmer evenings, and the comfort of chow mein and string bean chicken after a long day of numbers.

Spring will not erase the hard things, but it brings joy to my heart. I look out the office window at a hummingbird flirting with a flower and the wee lizard hanging from the screen keeping me company whilst I add up the numbers.

Food for Thought:
What would it look like to meet the demands of this season with both responsibility and gentleness, taking in the beauty, adding a dose of humor, and maybe even a little take-out to help carry you through?

Count on my friends, it will soon be all done.
