Tomorrow we celebrate the longest day of the year, and I am excited to be completing the drum making process with 15 new drums that will be awakened at the Solstice Drumming Circle. What a joy I remembered in this process, the teachings and the community, old friends and new ones that came together and made drums.
“You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you will discover is wonderful. What you will discover is yourself.” ~ Alan Alda
I had to step outside my comfort zone and back into “me” as I prepared for last week’s class. I have not been teaching “out there” in several years and the pull was strong both to “do it” and to step back and just stay comfortable. There is something both beautiful and terrifying about leaving what feels familiar and easy.
Even when the “city of your comfort” is too crowded with old expectations and stories (as mine had become), you may stay because you know the streets, the rules, where to hide, how to behave, and what version of yourself will be accepted there, by you and by others.
Then life whispers or sometimes shouts and shoves you toward something more real, more you, more fun and more enticing.
The wilderness of intuition is full of your own knowing, of your purpose and the challenges that come with it if you choose to accept them. It asks you to listen in a different way and to trust the quiet knowing you feel beneath the noise, that tug in your heart, the dream that will not leave you alone.
Letting go of what you are doing or not doing today doesn’t mean abandoning yourself, it means releasing that version of you that has become easy, the one you created to survive, to please, to fit in, or to feel safe. Letting go means making room for the “you” who has been waiting underneath it, all along.
Maybe that is why the journey feels so uncertain most of the time. We are not simply stepping into something new; we are meeting something old and true within us. We are stepping outside the “city of our comfort” to step back into ourselves and the dream we have been carrying but not living.
Where are you being called beyond comfort?
What old identity, habits, or expectations are you ready to let fly away on the wind?
What might you discover if you trusted your intuition just a little more and followed that pull or nudge to do something different, or return to something that fuels your joy?
This wilderness may look unfamiliar at first, yet it may also be the sacred place where you finally recognize yourself again.
When you let go of what you are today, you step into that wildness of what you might become, returning to or finding something new.
Sometimes the self you are searching for isn’t lost. She is simply waiting for you to leave the city gates and come find her. Go make a drum, grab your camera, paint your dream, and let go of your comfy chair. Trade it in for a new ride and keep on keepin’ on, blazing new trails that set your soul on fire and ignites your heart’s deepest desires.
Last week I said yes to stepping back out into the world of teaching, guiding, creating and loving. What will take you out of the “city of your comfort” and set you on a journey through the wilderness of your intuition and joy?
May Spirit Bless Your Journey.
