A Week in Search of Silence

A Week in Search of Silence

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”
~ George Bernard Shaw

The best laid plans of mice and men… right? If you want to hear God laugh, just make a plan.

I am so grateful for this little sanctuary I am blessed with here in AZ but, there are times when I wish the fairies would show up and do their magic before I arrive. The time here has flown by, and I can’t believe that when you all read this, I will be back in CA, probably sleeping in after that 10-11-hour drive.

Sometimes when I am here, I just want to hunker down with the blinds closed and the windows shut and pretend no one is home. I don’t think that feeds my joy, but it is sometimes just the “nothing” that I must crave until the to-do list blows off the counter in front of me and gives me the old “get off the shelf” and get busy nudge.

I am so grateful for this time of the year; everything is so full of promise. The cactus are blooming reds, oranges, and yellows. The sage is covered with purple flowers. The Saguaros are so plump from the rain they just “feel” happy and full as they begin to form their crowns of white flowers that will soon be bursting out on the tops of every arm.

I downloaded nearly 100 recordings from my phone this week. Listening to some and just doing the techy stuff with others. I even transcribed one. They are dinners and lunches and chats around the breakfast table with Lynn. There is noise, clanking dishes and servers taking orders, music blaring and distant laughter or baby cries. So much “noise” that holds the space for that magic that pops out in between bites of lemon shrimp or veggie burgers, cheese enchiladas or blueberry crepes.

Silence is part of how you reach that place of bliss within yourself.” Hearing those words from Lynn gave me goose bumps. Here I am writing about hunkering down and nothing. What AZ holds for me is a place where I truly find silence.

The everyday world where I live in CA has an unending cacophony of noise; motorcycles racing by, cars screeching or burning rubber, dogs everywhere barking at each other and at passerby’s. There are airplanes and helicopters, screaming kids and loud music. Even into the late-night hours, there is a noise there that pushes silence beyond my reach. Here in AZ, things become silent. The everyday noise is pushed back by a stillness that hangs out around my house. The stars sparkle and the land stills, the air even moves in silence (most of the time 😊). Perhaps it is just me that has slowed down here so I “hear” the silence that touches my heart and pushes me towards that “bliss within.”

Do you find it easy to step into silence or is it a challenge in your everyday world?

Do you have to “get away” to find the stillness that holds the wisdom of all possibility?

Do you “run away” from the noise and just find a different kind of noise in the place you ran to?

Simon and Garfunkel wrote… ”Within the sounds of silence… touched the sound of silence… disturb the sound of silence, echoed the wells of silence… whispered the sounds of silence.”  Can you feel it? Can you hear it?

I’d love to hear from all of you. Hit reply and share your thoughts online or via email, I am always listening. Your thoughts matter. #YouMatter

“Life is meant to be messy. Life is supposed to be a bit chaotic. Life is an adventure where we are always a single phone call away from heartbreak or the fulfillment of our wildest dreams. Of course, this is exactly what makes being alive the best game in the universe…” ~John Roedel

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO

May you find a place in your world where your “wildest dreams” scream out to you, “Here I am, come and let’s play.”
