Answer the Phone

Answer the Phone

What if the phone rings...
I woke up last Friday morning to fresh air coming in the bedroom window and the sound of pouring rain on the patio cover. Pouring rain, really?

Fully awake now, I realize it’s pouring but not raining. We’ve got a broken sprinkler head and a geyser in the backyard pelting the patio roof. Our sprinklers are only on for 20 minutes so by the time I woke up, got up, got hubby up, and got outside with flashlights, we were just in time to see the geyser recede and identify the broken sprinkler head.

There was nothing we could do in the dark so, back to bed.  When I got up later that morning, except for a class at 11, my morning was free. I decided to be lazy and just hang out in a pile of pillows with a good book. Turning the page on chapter 3, the phone rings. Another out-of-state number I don’t recognize. Do I answer and politely decline whatever offer is coming, or ignore it, or yell at someone hired (actually working a job) to call me?

I answered…to the most unexpected, delightful, and totally surprising call. A friend from the past was calling to tell me how this week’s Friday Food for Thought had been the perfect message for her, for that day, and instead of writing to me, she just decided to pick up the phone and call. What a gift on a morning when I was actually allowing myself some ‘me’ time, but chose to answer anyway. Thank you, Evelyn, you might have, heck, you did make my week!

Tonight, as I joyously languish in the energy of such a succulent memory, I say thank you to all of you who allow me the privilege of writing to you each week. As you read this, on this Friday morning or evening or whenever this tidbit reaches you, I challenge you to answer an unknown call even if you are taking some time out for you this weekend. Have some fun with this and when you can, post your experience. Email your reply or post something wherever you find my Friday Food for Thought.

If it’s a marketing call you answer, I challenge you to wish the caller well, thank them for doing their job, and let him or her know it is a ‘no’ from you today, good luck and hang up or engage them in some fun… I listened to my sister carry on a conversation with someone trying to sell her medical insurance and I never laughed so hard in my whole life.  What a kick.  I tried it when I got a call from someone wanting to know if I wanted to sell my house and I replied, quite shocked and excited with… “I have a house!  Oh my, I’ve been living with my mother for a year and you’re telling me I have a house? Where?”  They usually hang up, but if they don’t, I explain I’m a Realtor and wish them well in their “house” farming.

If it’s an old friend calling, take some of your ‘me’ time to reconnect and chat or maybe be that unknown caller who reaches back in time and reconnects to an old friend. Share your memories, your favorite movies, what you are doing for you in that moment.

What if the phone rings? I’ll be waiting to read all about your journeys.

Many blessings and may your weekend ring in unexpected surprises, and a sweet surrender to your own ‘me’ time, that time when you put You First.
