This past week has been filled with re-discovering the things in life that make me happy.
I spent several hours last weekend sorting baseball cards with my oldest grandson. He is going to France with a school group over Spring Break next year and was looking for a way to make his pocket money. My son started collecting baseball cards in elementary school (that would be like 40 years ago) and I continued for a while.
I was an avid card collector as a kid myself but when I went away to college and my mom “cleaned out” my room, she gave my precious cigar box to the neighbor who had five boys. There went two Mickey Mantles, Ty Cobb, Cornelius McGillicuddy (Connie Mack) and so many more I don’t remember.
It has not just been a joy, but such fun to sit and share memories while sorting hundreds of cards into teams and then putting them in albums. Stories surface about where a card had come from, like the signed Mark Maguire.
It took me a minute then I remembered I sold a house to a family that moved here from the Oakland area and their son worked in a baseball card shop. He knew a little restaurant where Mark often had breakfast, and he took a card to that café and got it signed for me. No providence but a great memory I got to share.
I remember when Maguire and Canseco were the Bash Brothers on the Oakland A’s and I remember the Battle of the Bay in ’89 when the earthquake brought a halt to a world series game. We were watching it on TV and the stadium lights swayed back and forth like a circus pole with an acrobat on top. Who knew those poles had such flexibility.
Great memories!
A few of us gathered for lunch later in the week to celebrate a dear friend and my adopted mama’s 90th birthday. Our Granny Annie is one of the most heart-centered women I know who lives each day in the joy of pure love for all that is, and all that surrounds her. Happy Birthday Ann.
Then to top off a wonderful week, the weather has cooled here. It is cloudy and threatening to rain, yes please. The wind has been blowing through the cottonwood trees sounding like a rushing stream as it dances with the wind chimes. I am so grateful to finally have unboxed and hung them where they can play with the wind.
Life is full of little wonders that can make us happy and this past week mine was overflowing. When you begin rediscovering or remembering the little things in life that make you happy, share that joy with others.
There is an endless supply of these moments that make us happy. As DailyOm reminded me, “All you have to do is look for them and they will magically appear.”
May your weekend and coming weeks be filled with an abundance of magical little moments and joy filled days.
