Basking in the Joy of Community

Basking in the Joy of Community

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

I had a wonderful visit to AZ this past week. The weather was beautiful, the heat taking an unusual break for June making the mornings and evenings just perfect for sitting outside with friends and enjoying the bird songs, the bees buzzing, and the silence of nature that surrounds us here.

I basked in the joy of community, old friends and newer ones. Company is so important to hold on to in these days of separation and anxiety that fill our airways and virtual worlds, sneaking through my best attempts to stave off fear and hang on to faith and hope that the world is in the midst of growing pains, and this too shall pass.

I told my grandson the other day that the one thing we can do for ourselves is to go out into the world as the best versions of ourselves each day. If we show up positive and joy-filled, looking up instead of down, smiling at strangers and waving at passersby, we add a bit of light to our day as well.

When someone or something comes at you in what feels like a hurtful way, take a moment to breathe and then try to start a conversation around how what you heard made you feel, rather than pointing fingers and saying that someone ‘hurt’ you. Maybe you can offer them a different point of view. They may have never heard how what they say so casually has such an impact on the people who hear it. In fun and jest, on purpose or totally without a clue, their words have power.

Share how you heard them and how they made you feel with no expectation of their understanding. You are just sharing your truth in that moment. It may not be theirs and that is OK.

What a great conversation to have with a vulnerable young man. These are the precious years when he can still “hear” grandma. 😊 His call meant the world to me.

And then there was my wonderful neighbor who on hearing I needed to see my eye doc earlier than July, insisted I call now rather than wait ‘til I got home. What a blessing, doc had an opening the day after my return.

The support of community is uplifting, encouraging, empowering and playful, engaging and fun. I shared some creative art time with an old friend who lives a distance away but took the time to drive up for a visit. I love sacred art and creativity. Fuels the soul’s joy.

Working on the place here can be a challenge but I am gifted with great craftsman and now the little pad that once held a power sucking and water wasting spa, is prepped for a gazebo with fan and lights poolside. New landscaping will fill in an empty corner and who knows, maybe this fall a fountain may find its way to that space. I do so love the sound of water.

Where have you found joy in this past week? Do you have a community of family and friends to hang out with? The virtual world is wonderful for creating great friendships, but nothing beats the hugs of old and new friends.

May you find funny movies to laugh at with friends (Book Club was a hoot), great little restaurants to share good food and chat away the hours, and conversations that scratch more than the surface of your thoughts, ones that sing with your soul.

Here’s to fun, food, friends, and the sacred sounds of nature…
