Today is my sister’s birthday. Happy Birth-Day, Pam.
This morning, I had the most wonderful conversation with my friend, Weam Namou, as we talked about her new book, The Path of Consciousness for Writers. Our conversation wandered through writing, creativity, consciousness, and the many ways women encourage one another to listen more deeply to the stories asking to be told.
Meanwhile, my wonderful daughter took her dad to lunch so I could have a quiet house, uninterrupted time to record, write, and follow the creative threads moving through my morning.
By the time I sat down at my desk, I found myself thinking about the women in my life.
The women who have supported me, the women who have inspired me. The women who have made room for me to create, to grow, to grieve, to laugh, to question, and to begin again.
Some are sisters by birth; many are sisters by choice. Some have walked beside me for decades, while others appeared at just the right moment, offering a word of encouragement, a listening ear, a helping hand, or the gentle reminder that I didn’t have to do everything alone.
Sisterhood doesn’t always arrive with a flurry of flags and a band playing Pomp and Circumstance. Sometimes sisterhood looks like a phone call that comes exactly when you need it. Sometimes it is a friend who believes in your dream before you are brave enough to believe in it yourself. Sometimes it is a daughter who takes her dad to lunch so her mother can have a few quiet hours to write.
Sometimes it is laughter around a table, tears shared without explanation, wisdom passed from one generation to the next, or the simple comfort of hearing someone say, “I get it.”
Women have an extraordinary ability to hold space for one another.
We witness each other’s lives, carry pieces of each other’s stories. We remind one another of our strength when we’ve forgotten, and we reflect back to each other the light we may no longer see in ourselves.
Of course, sisterhood isn’t always easy. After all, we are human. We misunderstand each other, we get busy, we lose touch. We compare ourselves when we should be cheering each other on. Yet, beneath all of that, there remains an opportunity to choose connection over competition, encouragement over comparison, and celebration over silence.
Today, I invite you to think about the women who have helped shape your life.
Who encouraged you when you were uncertain? Who sat beside you when there were no words? Who challenged you to grow?
Who made you laugh when life had become far too serious? Who protected your dreams while they were still to tender to share with the world?
Who made room for you to hear your own voice?
Perhaps today is a good day to tell her, or them.
Send a text, make that call, write an old-fashioned snail mail note and send it. Speak their names with gratitude. Celebrate their birthdays, their courage, their kindness ,their creativity, their resilience, or simply the gift of their presence in your life.
We don’t have to wait for a special occasion to honor the women we love, the ones who matter to us.
Sisterhood itself is the occasion.
Honoring all the women in my life that have held me up, held me together, and held me in their hearts. Right back at ya ladies.

Vicki is also an Artist of the Spirit Certified Spiritual and Energetic Life Coach, a Graduate Mentor in the AoS program and a founding member of HeatherAsh Amara’s Warrior Goddess Leadership Team and Facilitator of the Warrior Heart Practice.
