With decades gone by and unknown decades ahead, I am remembering Frank Sinatra’s famous song, My Way.
I haven’t always lived true to me. For many of those decades past, I didn’t know who “me” was or that there was an identity of me beyond what I gave to and did in the world. I let my need to please guide me through my 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and into my 50’s, I laughed and cried and pushed through anyway.
Then I met a woman who taught me about boundaries. She taught me that I had value beyond what I did and that, most importantly, that I could say ‘no’ when a ‘yes’ didn’t feel good or right.
Regrets, I’ve had a few but then who hasn’t? Looking back is a great way to remember the lessons those “regrets” gifted me. Reflection can be a powerful tool for healing those old wounds. But the past is just that, and not a good place to hang out. It is over and done, no changing it or going back. Each step I took, intentionally or reactively, was done as best I could with what I knew then, and I am grateful for all I have learned since.
There were times like Frank says, when I’m sure “I bit off more than I could chew,”. So many days, I didn’t have a clue and I can’t say, “I chewed it up and spit it out” but I faced it, full of doubt, and tried to just get by, even when I couldn’t see my way.
No guarantees come with our tomorrows, so I’ll just say, “Thank God for “each and every day.” I’ll do my best to chart the course, each step carefully taken along the way, each pivot made with grace and a smiling face.
I’ve loved and lost. I’ve laughed, cried buckets of tears, been blessed with a loving family, wonderful friends, and decades of years. I look back and smile, I did a lot. I was a maverick. I stood out. Now with unknown decades ahead, I can say, “I’m finally doin’ it my way.”
May you each face the days standing tall as you find “your way”.
Happy end of July.
