Don’t Give Up on Hope

Don’t Give Up on Hope

I watched a movie Sunday night called Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. I love the actors: Kurt Russell, Kris Kristofferson, and the indomitable Dakota Fanning. They brought to life the amazing story of a dream, three generations in its making, and the hope that fueled the fire that grew in the belly of a young girl who fell in love with a broken horse. In the end, as good stories promise, the dream became a reality for them all as it healed their family to boot.

I love a feel-good movie. I love watching the majesty of a horse running. The spirit of hope and joy and wonder that grows within the heart of anyone connected to a horse, especially one that can touch your soul, is one of those mysteries that transcends words.

The magic of horses that I see in my own family, is their ability to “hear the voice” of the horses they love. Connected, they dream together. Together they feel the goal/dream grow with each victory and they learn, together, with the “not-so-perfect” rides that happen in between those great victories.

The underlying truth; one central, humongously powerful, ever-present and impossible to connect without, is trust. In the trust that both human and animal must share, is HOPE. Hope in the belief that dreams can come true, hope for the dream that is to be, and hope never ending as the next dream comes into being. It is Hope that fuels and inspires the dreamer.

Win or lose it’s not always about the race, but maybe it’s about the mountain that’s climbed just to get to the race.

There was a story written in the movie by the character, Cale Crane, for a school project. She writes about a King and his Kingdom and how slowly his Kingdom is disappearing or being taken away by the dark forces she calls the Dark Knights.

In her story, the sad King dreamed about a magical horse that would save him. But when he found that dream horse, it was drowning in a raging river and the King had to save the horse.

Cale wrote her story as a parable about her own family and the broken horse that magically brought three generations together, sharing a single dream they had been chasing, unfulfilled for decades.

What I learned in watching, was how the fear of failure (seen by the grandfather shutting down), fed the dysfunction that shut down the relationship of father and son. How the son’s fear of losing it all (his kingdom), clutched at his throat ‘til he thought he would die. And then a little girl and a broken horse fell in love, shared popsicles, and the magic began.

The dad learned, in reading her story, the importance of trust. The grandpa in trusting again, opened up and shared his wealth of knowledge with Cale, and with trust restored, hope flourished. Cale didn’t just think she had a winner, she knew it! And so it was…! And so it was…

What I want you to know for sure, to feel today, is Hope… the powerful presence of a Hope that transcends all fear. In the deepest and darkest of troubling times, when it appears that all is lost, that the world is crumbling around us and we are in a freefall away from or through or underneath all that scares us, Grab a hold of Hope.

Desperation is not an option. You hang on like the frog clinging to the heron’s throat so you can’t be swallowed. You hang on to Hope like it’s the last knot on the end of the rope that dangles you over that raging river. And you embody the beauty and truth of Hope as you stand on the mountaintop and stare out at the kingdom that is yours, and you fulfill the dreams you carry silently tucked away in the bottom of your heart. Raise them to the world with your Hope.

As Grandpa (Kris Kristopherson) taught his son Ben and granddaughter Cale…I offer this mantra to you. Look in the mirror and repeat it out loud to yourself…

“You are a great champion. When you ran, the ground shook. The sky opened and mere mortals parted, parted the way to victory, where you’ll meet me in the winner’s circle, and I’ll put a blanket of flowers on your back.”

Be brave this week! Hold Hope close to your heart and run through meadows, climb mountains and forge raging rivers. YOU ARE THE DREAM!

Hanging on with ya all, in the dream and for the dreams coming,
