Godwinks and All Your Possibilities

Godwinks and All Your Possibilities

This year has been a roller coaster ride for me; soaring highs and deep dives, transitions and moves, welcoming new births and bidding farewell to lost loved ones. I think if I had to sum it up in a few words (not an easy task for me 😊), I would have to say, it has been a time of change.

I have come to embrace this one constant I read throughout W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gears series of books.  In each book at some point, an elder grandmother would counsel one of the youngsters to quell their fear with “The world is changing, and it always has. That is the way of the world.”

I can think of no better mantra to carry into 2022 on this last day of December of the 21st year of this 21st century.

I wish you all the peace deeply rooted in these words; The World is Changing.  They are not bad, not a prediction of destruction. It is an ancient truth that travels through peoples of all worlds, through time and throughout history.

It is our response and reactions to these words that defines how we will live through the changes, the tiny changes and the monumental, live changing ones. We cannot live joyously sleeping through the change or raging against it, we most certainly cannot change the changes happening with constant complaining or by sitting in anger.

My New Year’s resolution is going to be to embrace the world changing by being the change I want to see in my world.  I know, it sounds cliché’, everyone tells us, “Be the change.” It is my prayer that I will truly be able to embody these words.

Just yesterday, standing in line at the bank (yikes, one and two tellers working with 20 people waiting all the way out the door).  I was third in line when I heard the sweetest voice back by the door announce that she was 95.  I turned to see a beautiful woman, white hair, burgundy shawl around her shoulders balancing on a plain wooden cane, announce her age to the lovely woman (maybe in her 20’s) who had engaged her in conversation. Just when I looked, this exquisite elder pulled down her facemask and smiled, showing all the light flowing from her face into the room. She was so proud, and the young woman exclaimed how wonderful she looked.  Her answer was “Guess God isn’t finished with me yet!” And she replaced her mask.

My heart overflowed as the line inched forward and I was now next in line for a teller.  I turned around to the long line of waiting customers continuing to grow beyond the door and asked them to forgive me. I invited this wonderful lady to come to the front of the line and be next.  Her transaction didn’t take a minute and mine was quick too, so it wasn’t a major inconvenience to anyone. I left the bank full of grace from this chance encounter with such beauty.  Not just the elder woman but the young lady who chose to talk to her and open the door for her to light up the room with her joy-filled smile.

For you Hallmark Movie lovers, that was a ‘Godwink’ moment, little coincidences or accidental encounters that happen all around us and push us towards the life we are supposed to be living.

That is the change I am grateful for, the young engaging the elderly. This is the change I want to be, to step up. You never know what will happen when you open up the space for something new and sometimes
 just maybe
the best way to find yourself, is to take a step back and help another. Making a difference is something you can do anywhere, anytime, in just a moment or in a wide breadth of time.

Remembering to give yourself permission to put You First is just as important and taking that next step.  May the love you find in service to yourself and others, follow you home and light your way for the rest of your days.

PAY ATTENTION to those “God Winks” that remind you of all your possibilities.

May 2022 bless you with everyday winks, spontaneous moments that fill a room with light, and that one truth, that knowing that the world is changing, and everything will be alright.

Godwinks to you All.
