Gratitude in Anticipation of the Rain and Happy Halloween

Gratitude in Anticipation of the Rain and Happy Halloween

Create an awesome rest of your year

Looking out the window in anticipation of the coming rain, I spotted movement in the little oak tree about twenty feet away.  A flash of red and gray jumped off the lowest limb and scurried across the lawn. I am so used to the ground squirrels here, aggravating little rodents that they are; chewing up drip lines, digging holes in the least expected places. I was pleasantly surprised to see a beautiful gray squirrel searching for acorns that haven’t grown yet in these little trees.

I open the new door in my office and stepped out into a soft, cool breeze on this clouded afternoon and inhaled the fresh scent of the coming rain.  Did I mention that I love the rain? I sleep with the windows open just to hear its song, or wake to the gentle dripping melody of what remains running off places where the water has pooled.

If you have followed me for very long, you may remember my special relationship with the hawks.  They are my allies, my messengers and my guides.  My daughter found a hawk feather here at our house, the last time I was gone to AZ but I have yet to be blessed by the gift of feathers in this new place. I have lived here for nearly two years now and not yet been gifted by even the sight of a hawk until today.

The hungry little squirrel that invited me outside, gifted me with the sight of a pair of hawks sitting in the tops of the neighbor’s trees. I imagine them hunting those pesky ground squirrels that seem to flourish in our area.  I just stood and stared until one, then the other lifted off into the wind currents circling overhead.  A pair, such a gift.  Did you know that hawks mate for life?  I am hoping that means I will be seeing more and maybe young-uns in the Spring.

I’ll raise the blinds in my office just a bit more now so I can see the tree tops across the street while sitting at my computer and maybe, just maybe, my time with the hawks will begin again. I am seeing it so…

Taking in a deep breath, hand over heart, I spoke silently my gratitude to the coming rain, to the funny squirrel and to the trees that held the grip of the hawks for me to finally see.

What part of nature calls to you, the one that sets you free from whatever task you are entranced in, and pulls at you to come and see?  Do you allow yourself the opportunity?

Do you say yes when you feel that tug in your belly that pulls your attention away from the screen, the stove, the kids?  Do you allow yourself just a few moments to follow the pull and be enamored by the gift on the other end, in whatever form it takes?

Next time you get distracted, pay attention, and gift yourself a few precious moments to “see” and “feel” into the calling.  You may just find the first bloom of spring or the sun popping through after the storm, the moon encircled by a rainbow or a hawk hunting it’s evening meal.

Put you first and follow your instinct to look, play with and enjoy the wonder and gifts Mother Nature is sharing every single day.

And by the way… HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Blissed out in joy,
Vicki
