Hot Summer Days and Celebrations

Hot Summer Days and CelebrationsI hung out in the coolness of the early morning under a ceiling fan today, listening to the chatter in my head as this weekly message began to take form. I could write about our trip to Cave Creek and the helplessness that comes when you discover you are stranded in a hot parking lot and your mind wanders to all the possibilities of getting home. But that’s a story for another time, one of lost key fobs and great friends.

I could write about the sizzling heat that stifles even the bravest who dare out into it and the dangers of extreme temperatures but then, most of us are aware or the TV or our phones remind us of the perils of Mother Nature in all her glory. Suffice it to say, 111 degrees is not my favorite temperature though in looking for the good in it, the little pool at the AZ house was so warmly inviting as to make moonlit swims delicious.

Instead, I want to write about happy things, things that make me laugh and bring joy to my life. I want celebrate the wins, the milestones and the magic of just living every day. Chaos and confusion, frustration and aggravation are constants in our lives and sometimes it is important to pay attention to that swirling, gut-busting, sleep-depriving, maddening energy.

Today, I choose to pay attention to love, to the wonder that is always present and not often noticed. The joy of plucking a fresh peach off the tree to slice over vanilla ice cream, homemade plum (from our own tree) jam on a turkey sandwich (don’t knock it til you’ve tried it), and a road-runners return visit in AZ (they are good luck you know)?

I want to congratulate my big Sis on reaching a milestone birthday, healthy, strong, prosperous, and happy as she awaits the arrival of her second grandson. How delicious will Christmas be this year with her newborn and toddler grandsons joining our new teenager and soon to be double digit aged 10-year-old boys? Our little family is growing, joyfully.

Today I choose to honor the hard work and dedication of my daughter and her love for her horses as she completes another of her goals; bringing home a champion buckle from the Reining by the Bay show in Woodside, CA. Ride on Raney and Faith.

And not the least of my joy this week comes tomorrow after this letter is sent out, as my husband Danny and I celebrate 50 years of marriage. My parents were sure it wouldn’t last, his mom didn’t think he would take on the responsibility of a wife, let alone children. I questioned our love so many times, I could probably write a whole book just about that.

In retrospect, love endures even the toughest of times when it is held close to the heart. Calling it quits when the going gets tough can sometimes feel like the way to go, and I will admit, I have been there, done that and I am sure there were days when Danny felt the same. Life isn’t easy and relationships are hard work and growing old in this world together will bring on a whole new dimension of “us” that will challenge love, but love endures when it is held close to the heart.

I dreamed our togetherness long before I actually met Danny. He was in Viet Nam and I was in college. I met a friend who knew him and had tried to set us up on a blind date, but he left for overseas before that could happen. I began writing to him, a lot, over the next several months. He was wounded in Jan of 1968 and sent to a base hospital in country of a month. He sent me a picture of himself from there and I framed it with a poem I cut out of some magazine.

“For we were young, and love was grand,
I gave her kisses, held her hand.

We walked along the rivers way and talked
of when would be our wedding day.”

7-22-72 at 2:00 pm, that day arrived and I am so very grateful for the journey, proof positive that dreams do come true, that what we believe we can achieve, and persistence through resistance creates a life-long bond of love that endures, carried close to the heart.

Thank you all for being part of my journey, for listening each week to my stories and for creating this sacred circle with me.

May you find love in your world and joy to feed your soul each and every day.
