6 Ways Your Life Can Change When You Adopt an Optimistic Attitude
Gratitude fills my heart this week as I look back on wrapping just the right gifts, adding a light here or there to the décor, lighting candles in the evening while watching Hallmark Christmas movies by the fire. It is a time for me, of rest, reflection, remembering and eating leftovers.
What do you do in the space between celebrations?
This is the time of the year when I begin two new journals… one I will write in whenever or wherever, the other is my gratitude journal. This one I try to write in every night before the lights go out.
Tracking gratitude is one of the ways I maintain an optimistic outlook on life. When words of judgment or condemnation, gossip or bs, shoulda’s, woulda’s, or coulda’s spew out all over the page, I am brought back to me with gratitude. I am grateful for the page I write on and the pen I love to write with.
Sometimes I just have to stop midsentence in a conversation and shout out, “Through it all and in spite of it all, I am grateful for the abundance in my life. I am blessed and I say thank you!”
We are in that time of in-between; in between holidays, in between the old year and the incoming one, in between crazy busy holidays and more restful vacation days.
“The times, they are a-changin’” Bob Dylan wrote back in the 60’s. So true today… change is as natural as breathing.
When I tap into the energy of change; sometimes it’s scary, sometimes it’s frustrating, maddening even, and at other times it is exhilarating. It always feels like that in-between place that resides in the last week of a year, is a powerful one for me.
It is a time of transition, leaving behind the old, the un-needed, the useless (have you seen my closet lately), and stepping into the uncertainty of what is yet to come.
Making a plan can relieve some of the anxiety that comes with change. Take time to take care of you, to do things you enjoy; take a walk, read an inspirational book, or explore a new hobby, go to the movies, spend time in nature, create your own ceremony or celebration.
Pay attention to your dreams during this time of the year. Use your journaling time to reflect on any messages or symbols that may hold spiritual significance, wisdom or guidance for you personally.
Many years ago, a new friend shared with me her New Year’s Eve practice. We are not big party people (I think I have been to three New Year’s parties with hubby in the 55 years we have been together). He’s an early bird to bed and to get up and I am a night owl. Since most of my New Year’s Eve time is alone, it is perfect to practice what she shared with me- Journal the Year behind and the Dream of the Year Ahead.
I start my new Journal on the 31st and take some time to reflect on and to replay the past year. I may read parts of last year’s journal and I look at what worked and didn’t work in my world. It is a time of introspection and forgiveness as I let go of what I am holding against myself and release what I may be holding against others.
I hope you find the beauty that lives in the in-between time and remember that your journey is yours, deeply personal.
Do what resonates with your heart in this sacred time of completion and new beginnings. It is a sacred space for your own self-discovery, growth, and a deepening connection with what is truly important for you.
Nurture you, intentionally; body, mind, heart, and soul.
May the New Year bring an abundance of blessings your way as you Soar into 2024.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
