Letting Go is an Exercise and an Experience to be Practiced and Cherished…

Letting Go...Since the first of the year and our Soar into ’24 class, I have been adding to my list of things that I need to let go of in order to manifest my best year yet. My word for this year is completion. I have added to that courage and stepping up to the plate.

This past week we held a sacred gathering at my place in AZ and a dozen of us spent the weekend doing just that… identifying what we need to let go of and what we need to do or bring into our lives to manifest the dream we hold for the coming year. At the same time, we were engaged in the creation of a sacred fire and ceremony to release all that no longer serves us.

The process required us to strip old prayer sticks of things that were toxic to burn or would not burn and to release them in a sacred manner. So many things came up for me as I clung to stories, some of my own and many manufactured or “heard” in the process of cleaning these sacred sticks for burning.

Letting go is a profound exercise in the art of living and one that has challenged me for most of my life (I still have my first Breyer horse even though her leg is broken). It is certainly a skill that requires patience (mine and those who love me), and a deep understanding of myself and what I am really holding on to.

What I learned this past week is that much like those core muscles that hold us upright and need to be exercised to stay strong, the ability to release attachments (stories) and surrender to the flow of life as it is and not how we think it should be, is a practice that can be cultivated with time, patience, and support.

I have written in the past about weaving the tapestry of our lives with intimate connections to the warp and the weft, to the memories, experiences, relationships and aspirations that create the masterpiece that we are becoming.

Yet, there comes a time when the fabric becomes burdened, weighted down with the “stuff” of our stories and the threads of attachment begin to hinder our growth. Letting go is the gentle unraveling of these threads allowing space for new patterns to emerge in the design of our lives.

This experience, as I have walked through it lately, is both liberating and transformative. It has been a conscious choice to release the grip I had on what wasn’t mine, what no longer serves me, what has become a storage box that just gets moved with me and never attended to, by me.

I am learning that in this act of surrender, there is a profound freedom, a breath of fresh air, a space that grows within for personal healing and self-discovery. Cherishing this practice of letting go involves embracing the impermanence and acknowledging the beauty in the ebb and flow, in the warp and weft of the weaving. It is a dance with the rhythm of change and each step forward holds newfound wisdom and resilience.

By letting go, I have opened myself to the possibilities that lie beyond the boundaries of my comfort zone. Just as the trees have let go of their leaves this winter in preparation for new growth in the coming spring, I am letting go of “stuff” that has no particular name. I am releasing the “stuff” of things, emotions, feelings, relationships… all that weighs down the journey of unopened bins that are ages old.

For me now, this “letting go” is no longer associated with “lost” or “forgotten” but rather with a new appreciation and gratitude for the parts they have played in my life even as I let them go on to teach others who are ready to learn from them.

May you all find those “packed boxes” and the courage to let them go, to release them into the Universe of wonder and magic as they find their way to other and more important places than where you hold them.

And Happy Trails along the Way…
