Listening to Fate… She can be a Pushy Ally!

Listening to Fate… She can be a Pushy Ally!My life is an unending journey of experiences, choices, pivots and unexpected turns. As I journey through it, I find I am often guided by the unseen hand of Fate, a relentless and most often unpredictable force in my life. It is a constant reminder that while I can plan and prepare, there are times I must simply surrender, let go and float along in the river of life.

One of my most challenging aspects of living in this “out of my control” world, is accepting that I have no control, that there is a greater hand in play, and I am but a player on its stage. You know, the old adage, “let go and let God?”

I begin to recognize that unseen hand of Fate intervening and redirecting me in ways I never anticipated. It is in those moments of “pivot” (aka redirection), that I feel disconnected, disrupted, dislodged, and dumped out of my comfort zone. Yet, in retrospect, they have often been the catalysts, the ignition, the spark that sets me off in a new direction of growth and personal self-discovery.

When embraced, Fate is one of my super Allies. She is pushy, demanding, disruptive, frustrating, and fearsome. She is a motivator and an instigator that creates the best pivots in my world. Even now while our family is facing some health issues, our AC took a fritzy vacation during the hottest heat wave in eons, and we learned to play in the sprinklers, take cold showers (often) and be still most of the day. In that stillness comes wisdom.

It has been said that silence can wield more power than words and I for one have learned that first hand. I did not understand silence until I was in my fifties. Before that, silence was quite simply, the absence of noise; the TV or the stereo, the kids, the traffic, people, places, loud… noise. In its absence therefore there was silence.

What I know now, is that there is much power and wisdom in silence, regardless of any or all of the “noise” going on around me.

In silence, I am learning, lies a profound inner truth – mine!

Learning to trust that is a story for another time but for now, all I have to do is take the time to “find” my own place in silence and master the art of listening.

What I have come to know is that Fate doesn’t always shout, sometimes, she whispers, offers gentle nudges and intuitive feelings that when paid attention to, guide me towards my own true path.

Listening, I am discovering, requires a quiet mind and an open heart. For it is in those moments when I am able to move into “true silence”, that I am able to hear the faint call of Fate that may be suggesting a “pivot” or pointing out a new opportunity or perhaps, just reminding me of my own need for more patience and less procrastination.

While Fate’s whispers can guide me gently, there are times when she pushes forcefully, intervenes intentionally, disconnects me from the familiar I tend to cling to, and pushes me past the fear of stepping out of my comfort zone.

I know ultimately that her interference is by its very nature, in my best interest. It most often propels me down the path of my true purpose when I have been in a foggy phase, unable to see the path ahead.

As painful as Fate’s push may be, it often clears the path to something better. I watched the series Queen Sugar and the character Hollywood summed up this thought perfectly:

“You can’t wait for the bad to be over, you’ve got to live through it and find pieces of joy along the way.”

When it feels like you have lost control, been pushed out of your comfort zone, lost someone or something dear to your heart and it feels like there is no hope… I hope you can find the power ever present in silence and listen to the voice of your own inner truth, the profound wisdom that resides in the depths of your very soul.

Embrace the unpredictable that comes with living in balance and surrender. Tune in to the subtle whispers on the wind. Move without resistance when the “push” comes and explore an alliance with Fate. She may be a pushy broad at times, but she is also a wise and engaging guide leading us to where we may truly belong.
