Mother’s Day Remembering

  • by
5.9.25 meme remembering mothers.

Creative expression: how can one have so much resistance to that which calls from the heart? Here it is late in the week, and I am just now sitting down to the computer to write as Mother’s Day beckons me for words.

When the ache is too tender, when the silence of absence or the weight of memory presses too hard, I take to pen and pad and rewind the clock.
I begin to write about the generations of mothers…those who came before me, walked beside me, and those who have followed in sacred echo.

One by one, I invite them into the room of my remembering.
I sit with each one I knew; my mother, my grandmothers, my sisters in motherhood, my daughter as a mother now, and my friends who are mothers or mother with love in their world. Even those I have never met but carry in my blood, I let them speak in the language of lineage.

For each, I write at least one thing I am grateful for…
Grateful for the songs they hummed while stirring soup,
Grateful for the fire in their eyes when they stood up for what mattered,
Grateful for the tenderness in their calloused hands,
Grateful for the laughter that rose with flour on the nose and the taste of fresh cookie dough.
Grateful for the stories they handed down like heirlooms.
Grateful for pot roast with home grown vegetables and lots of gravy.
Grateful for the love of art they infused with their art in my heart.

For the mother who birthed me and the mothers who built me.
For the ones who held space when I was lost or buried in the depths of grief.
For the fierce and the flawed, the soft and the silent,
I find something to thank them for, something that stirs with the memory in my heart.

And in doing so, I remember that gratitude is the thread that mends wounds in fabric and in skin, in hearts and souls.
It stitches memory to meaning, turns sorrow into reverence and absence into presence.
On this Mother’s Day, I do not try to capture it all.
I simply write one thank you at a time, until my heart feels full enough to rest.

May the mothers that fill your memories rise gently in your heart on Sunday.May you feel their love in the wind, their wisdom in your bones, and their resilience in the way you keep on keepin’ on.May gratitude be the bridge that opens the doors of your remembering this Mother’s Day and remind you that you are never walking alone. You are part of a sacred lineage by blood and a sacred circle by choice.

You too are someone’s blessing… past, present, and future…yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Honor the mothers who shaped you, the mother you are, and the mothering spirit that lives in all of us. Gratitude is the key that opens hearts, it is an offering and a healing balm.

I hope you will find the time this weekend to sit quietly and call forth the memory of a mother or mother figure from your life and write one true thing you are grateful for about her, no matter how simple or small. Let gratitude lead you to the next, to another and another until your remembering room is full.

If grief shows up, welcome it with open arms and let it come. If joy bubbles up, embrace it and let it rise. May you find time for remembering the legacy of love, strength, and wisdom that lives on through you.

Many Blessings and In Joy…
