Open Doors

Open Doors

“…If you have an old, old story, that is a door. If you love the sky and the water so much you almost, cannot bear it, that is a door. If you yearn for a deeper life, a full life, a sane life, that is a door.” ~ Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes

One of the hardest doors I have tried to keep open through the years, has been the one labeled YOU FIRST, letting it be OK to put me first.  I cave to the “please will you, can you, I need you” requests that come into my life, almost as if it is my responsibility for the outcome of the request, especially if I say no.

There are people in my life I would drop everything for anytime I am needed, and then there are others who are just always needy and those are the ones who I am learning to say ‘no’ to.  I am learning to offer opportunities to them “to fish” rather than continually giving these people fish.  Hopefully with each “fishing” experience they have, they will discover they do have the ability to open new doors and to walk for themselves, out of their old stories.

Guilt, on the other hand, another one of my traveling companions on a regular basis, chimes in whenever I have the pull to say no.  “But if you don’t, who will? What happens if I can’t do it?”

Talk about ego playing on a larger stage at that point, really? Like not even my story to tell, let alone my responsibility for how the story plays out so why is Guilt nagging me?

Why am I questioning all of this?  My plans took a 180 this past week and I find myself still in CA instead of in NM with friends and teachers.  The one amazing teacher I have been trying to sit in circle with for the past four years announced that she will not be there in person but will zoom to the audience at the hotel.  It is a decision, I am sure, was hard for her to make, but she had to say yes to herself and her place in this ever-changing world, to put herself first.

It feels like a door shut.  Wow, did you feel that? That voice of poor me jumped right to the forefront of my attention.  I don’t think so!

Using this experience as an opportunity to open a new door, I called in a support system and hired a “coach” to help push me across my own designated finish line.  Spirit opened an opportunity for me to do something for me, with the time that opened in front of me, by not going to New Mexico.  I chose the YOU FIRST door.

If you are struggling with putting You First in your life, is it time for you to look into something new, move someplace new, or just open a new door?

Sometimes just seeing the world from another perspective can open a brand-new door for you or, unbolt the rusty hinges of an old familiar one.

Take a chance, pick a door and live purposefully, you’ve got the key.

See you behind your next door,
Vicki
