Procrastination as a Friend…

6.30.23 meme Procrastination as a friend

Take that one and ponder it for a moment or a few. Take a different look at it and perhaps even ask it to dance with you. I did this past week. Turned out to be a successful delay of the inevitable task, but it worked in my favor as I completed a work that has been waiting on me to edit for nearly a year now.

Procrastination inadvertently led me to the completion of something I didn’t even know was actually blocking the path to my finishing another project. It inadvertently led me to a pleasant, perhaps even serendipitous discovery.

This week’s interview with world renowned psychic and multi-book author, Linda MacKenzie, founder of HealthyLife.net Positive Talk Radio was a gift for me as well as my listeners. Her new book The Symbols of You is a jam-packed resource for every sort of symbolic artifact or thought you can imagine with 85 charts that help you design the course you want to take. Be it angels, archetypes, crystals, trees, colors, your palm, animals, dice, or even the bumps on your head, Linda offers us a glimpse into the world of symbols and gifts us with thought provoking practices to aid us on the journey.

What really got me was when she relayed a message she received from our mutual friend, Lynn Andrews, that was the exact same thing my son shared with me after his passing 18 years ago today. As I write this, I am reminded of the gift he was in my life, of the friend she was in my world, and how even though they are gone, they are ever near (as Jack Crimmins wrote) in the faraway. Thank you, Linda.

I got off track there for a moment… I put off reading Linda’s book for the past several weeks and feared yesterday, as the day flew by in celebration of my oldest grandson’s 14th birthday, that I would not make a very good host for the Tuesday show. I try to have original questions that come up in reading the information a guest sends me and I had put it off and put it off. Crime Scene Kitchen went along with the left-over pancake late night snack as the book lay beside my chair with highlighter and sticky tabs. Alas, eleven pm came and I gave up and headed to bed setting the alarm to a time much earlier than I knew I would wake up unaided. I’d get it all done in the morning and be prepared.

Oh nooooo you don’t,” that incessant voice whispered in my ears between the notes of music that filled the room distracting me from the tinnitus ringing in my ears. “Get ‘er done or there’s no sleep for you in the near future.”

I rolled out of bed about midnight and took up vigil at the all too bright computer monitor, book in hand, sticky tabs on the desk now. I was blown away by the sheer volume of information in the book but trusted that where it fell open, I was supposed to read. It all got done, ready for later that morning as though there was no deadline pushing sleep out of my bed.

It was a great interview (you can catch it here https://vickidobbs.com/kindred-spirits-interviews)

I guess what all this “story” line is leading back to is the power of procrastination when held as a friend, not the enemy. It acts as a time of percolation in my world and allows ideas and concepts to brew in my mind while it is distracted by other tasks or mundane musings.

For me, procrastination can be a great distraction which when left unchained, can derail the best laid plans of mice and me. But it is also my ally when I need time for me, time for expanded creativity, or moments for mysterious incubation of ideas or messages I didn’t even know were waiting for me to hear.

Next time you feel guilty for putting something off, ashamed for doing something for you when you “shoulda” been getting something else done, cut yourself some slack. Take a deep breath and move into the procrastination destination and ask what you are missing, what you need to do first, before, instead of… use Procrastination as motivation and inspiration.

Maybe, just maybe, your best ideas are just waiting for the right moment to be birthed as your mind meanders into an unexpected connection with it.

What hidden treasures lie in your moments of procrastination?

When you think you “shoulda” done something different, what did you really get done?

What is the secret superpower disguised as your procrastination?

Have a super safe and wonder-filled holiday celebrating the Independence of our country. God Bless America and all who share her beauty, from sea to shining sea.

Party on friends and Happy Trails…
