Re-Connecting with Old Friends

Re-Connecting with Old Friends…

Re-Connecting with Old Friends...This morning I sit in my office with the door open, welcoming in the cool breeze of a very unusual August day. My bedroom door is open as well, and the cross breeze is soft, quieting under a cloud-filled, blue sky. I am alone at the house for a while this morning, a rare event (well except for the dog who is enjoying the open doors and scents on the wind).

I busy myself with writing, contemplating the joy of friendship, and listening to Simon and Garfunkel. There is much prophetic and profound wisdom in their lyrics. Gives one pause to stop and consider… contemplate… remember.

This week I have been celebrating friends. Our closest friends are like a big ol’ warm, fuzzy hug, a “safe place”, a shelter. That space between us can be hours, days, or years but when we re-connect, it is as though time hasn’t passed at all, except for those new wrinkles that show up on our faces when we break into a smile. Friends are the one place where we can feel truly free to be ourselves, fully present, and mask free (metaphysically speaking).

As I move through this life journey, I look back at the friendships forged, wonder where some went and smile at their memories. Others I wish were still around, and then there are those that I am blessed to have had in my life even as time and distance separate us. My daughter once reminded me when I was grieving a lost relationship, that our friends come into our lives for a reason (short term), a season (long term), or a lifetime (forever). Our forever friends become part of our families of choice. This summer is becoming a time of re-connecting for me; to local community, to long-distant friends, and to friends just around the corner that I haven’t seen in months, some even years.

Are you missing connections in your world? I encourage you to reach out, call, write, call again. Don’t allow time and distance to separate you from all that is wonderful in your world. Friends are one of the most precious gifts we have in this world.

Glenda and I took a trip to the Giant Redwoods in Grant Grove last week. Sooo many people there, finding silence among the Giants felt impossible until we watched everyone go one way and we chose to go another. I’ve taken friends to these amazing Standing Tall Ones for decades now. They are truly ancient and wise masters. I have such great memories there, walking through the hollow downed tree, big enough on the inside to stand arms outstretched to a friend, fingertips touching each other, and each of us touching the sides of the tree. We could barely connect to the width of this space. Awe inspiring in size, and the color of all the lichens and moss that brightened with the touch of recent rain and sun. Indescribable.

I once had a friend find a tiny crystal high on the crest of the redwood bark on a tree. I was lying inside of that same tree taking pictures up and into the light. It was one of those awe moments these big trees bring. As we left, I took her picture on a little bridge over the creek that ran down the hill in front of the old tree. Days later when the film was developed (yep, before digital technology), we were both blown away by the photo. There was a rainbow arching from that tree to her pocket that held the crystal. Magic is alive and well in the redwood forest.

Another dear friend and I were there when the snow was about a foot deep around the trees but the pathway fairly clear. We were one of a very few visitors and took the opportunity to sneak inside one of the burned out but still alive and thriving Giants. Let me tell you now, there is pure magic in the drumbeat that resonates back to you from the blackened walls of the inside of a burned out, living redwood.

The stories I could tell would keep you reading for hours, so I will just finish up this week by reminding you to reach out, re-connect, visit and talk to your friends, old and new. Calendar time for your friends and show up for you and for them. Take a drive, visit places that are like old friends. You will never regret the time spent in fellowship with like-minded, kindred spirits, in nature or in person, traveling this life’s journey alongside you, seen or unseen.

Sending you all a big, warm, fuzzy hug with much gratitude for your company along the way.
