Seeing with New Eyes

Seeing with New Eyes

I got new glasses this week… hip hip hooray!

I had lens replacement surgery aka cataract surgery, ages ago and opted for the newest bifocal implants and have had vision issues ever since. That’s a long story for another time but suffice it to say, that two other optometrists tried to make glasses for me to assist in the computer vision and reading more than a foot from my face not to mention the road signs, unsuccessfully.

You see, these lenses are made with concentric circles and don’t play well with others. The eye doc suggested contacts as it would not create the distance from the eye to the lens but happy happy, I met a new optometrist in his office.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love waking up in the morning able to “see” clear enough that I’m not searching for the old glasses that were trifocals (can you say far-sighted with stigmatism)? Go for a walk on a winter day with no lens steaming up or take a hike and see the low hanging branches that I bumped looking over the multi-focal lens to see the ground where I was placing my feet.

I love the freedom of going and doing without glasses but here I am, some 15 years later (and our eyes do age right along with us), struggling to stay long at the computer and read road signs, or menus with a flashlight six inches from my nose. But glory be, I am still reading and working and writing and now…

I have new computer glasses. I have new glasses to wear everyday and as I get used to looking through them, I am reading the subtext on the TV once again and the aisle items signs at the grocery store without standing under them. Hallelujah for a new optometrist who found a way to make me glasses that work even though I may still need some tweaks on down the road.

Isn’t it amazing how something so important takes on a life of its own in the struggle to master the miracle of aging with grace, some irritation, and a lot of gratitude?

I’ve been reading a new book coming out called Powered by the Pivot, by Cheri Warcholak Lohrey, which is very much like Matthew McConaughey’s Greenlight, it is about recognizing those moments in our life that are pivotal (or Greenlights). Love the storytelling, love the story, the inspiration, the me-too moments and most of all, the fact that I could read it effortlessly with my “new eyes”.

I think DailyOm Inspirations says it best with these words. “There are few activities as comforting, relaxing, and healthy as perusing the pages of a good piece of fiction or nonfiction.” Amen!

What is your favorite book?

So many of my ah-ha moments have come from the pages of wonderful books the authors of whom even became mentors. I learn from their experiences and recognize my own in the process of turning the pages. My emotions are often tickled, passion rises and flows across pages of time and in different places all while engaging my imagination to stay with them.

I get to step into the story and be present for the lessons that wait even in the most fantastic, wildly crazy, and unimaginable places with people and animals and forests and rivers all adding to the magic, the mystery, the teaching, and the experience of a great story.

I dare say that many of these stories have become a part of me, of my own story, of who I am and who I am becoming along the way. The memories I carry from the pages flavor my world with new and delicate spices, pictures of ancient and future worlds, of people, places, and things that I may never see or meet in this earth walk, but they have become friends, familiars, “homelands” as faraway as they are near in these pages.

If you haven’t read a book, just for the joy and pleasure of it in a while, try and gift yourself the time – choose you first and read, take an adventure, share the empathy of another’s story, or learn something new and exciting that you have been curious about for years.

What great and wonderous story would you like to read?

Have you ever considered writing yours?

Upward and onward, inward and outward, adventure bound or journeying for you, gift yourself a new book, and enjoy the read.

Happy Trails through the mazes of a writer’s mind…
