Stepping into the New Year with a New Perspective

Plant a Tree in 2023

I am writing this morning on one of those still rare occasions with it is just beginning to get light outside. It is cold but dry this morning and I am so grateful for all the rain we have been blessed with in this past week and for the submersible pumps we have to direct the water around our house and into ditches that will allow it to seep into the ground.

I got a cold for Christmas (after a wonderful family gathering) and passed it along to hubby a few days later. It certainly made for an interesting end to 2022 and quiet a beginning to 2023. Even our precious dog Darby, who hasn’t been feeling up to par, made it to the vet only to discover she had pneumonia. That’s a first for me. In all the years I have had dogs, never had one get pneumonia.

Apparently, the vets are seeing more respiratory issues in dogs lately. I for one, am truly appreciative of breath. Fresh cold air on a brisk evening inhale that clears my mind and that first breath of the morning as the sun rises in the east and turns the grayish blue sky pastel with gold and pink, crimson and orange. Fresh air. In 2023, I am going to bless the air I breath and plant some more trees in gratitude for the air they gift all of us.

I have been paying a bit more attention to my perspective lately, watching my thoughts bounce around judgement (why did I get sick, why didn’t I get more rest, why, why… ) and then bounce back into gratitude, how blessed I am with family and friends, food and shelter, water and air.

Perspective is a funny thing; it can change in an instant if you allow yourself to go there. I think freedom comes when we allow ourselves the permission to change our perspectives, even from moment to moment. To be aware of where our thoughts are taking us and change directions if it better serves us.

Think about looking out the window of an airplane, the view from above the clouds looking down instead of standing on the ground looking up at the clouds. How does your mind wander around in the white puffiness or gray singed billowing thunderheads when you change your perspective?

Last summer I got a message from the Universe (aka Mike Dooley) reminding me that, “Reality is not what your eyes show your mind, but what your thoughts create for your eyes to see. You are not limited by logic, the past, or the world around you. You are not of the world around you; it is of you. You came first. Magic, miracles, and luck are the consequences of understanding this, the inevitable byproducts of dreaming and acting in spirit of appearances.”

My dear teacher Lynn Andrews would constantly remind us that “what we imagine is real.” Turn loose your imagination in 2023. Gift yourself with a new perspective and lean into the magic and mystery of your world as you create it in the stories you tell yourself, the ones you write, the journeys you take and the seasons as they pass.

May you find joy, wonder, love, and laughter in each new moment of the coming year.

Many blessings for an awe-filled 2023 AND… if you are so inclined, find a place to plant a tree in 2023 and bless the air around you.
