I find myself welcoming a new year with the same feelings floating about that mirror the old year passing. Strange how as I get older, some milestones generate celebrations and others pass with the setting sun.
That’s how New Years Day felt to me, just another day with more football than usual. Today is the first Friday of a new month, a new year, another weekend… where have all the others gone, long time passing?
I intended to make lists; what I want to do, where I want to go, what I want to write, paint, create, release. What I did was binge a Netflix series until midnight came and I officially stepped into a new year on the way to bed.
I woke up to gray skies and raindrops singing in unison with the falling cottonwood leaves. I rolled over, snuggled in and slept until our dog Darby barked yet again at unknown noises or unseen guests. I yawned and crawled out of the warm covers to be greeted by sunshine and giant puddles all over the land, each reflecting a blue sky filled with white puffy clouds.
I know more rain is on the way and I am grateful for the break between storms to allow Mother Earth to soak up the much-needed water before more falls and just runs off down the streets to who knows where.
What I did sit down and honor, was what I have done this past year. I started reading from the 2025 gratitude jar and realized that I survived a cardiac episode, walked another year down the cancer road with hubby and celebrated dates that meant something like birthdays and anniversaries, ours and the kids and grandkids, family and friends.
I wrote a little book introducing the gifts of our Good Enemies and finished a short devotional called The Quiet In-Between, 30 Days of Sacred Wisdom and Soul Reflections (available later this month). My biggest accomplishment this year was completing the fifth revision of A Daily Walk with Wisdom, a 365-day journey with quotes, reflections, and affirmations to walk with a reader as a companion and guide.
My oldest grandson is driving, the youngest now officially a teenager, my oldest great nephew started pre-K school, and two new baby girls joined our extended family. My hubby’s oldest brother’s youngest son’s children, welcomed Winslow and Eleanor into their worlds.
It still fascinates me how even when the days pass sunrise to sunset, the weeks blend one into another, and the months fly by like days used to, that there is still beauty, magic, miracles, and marvels that can be found in them all.
Maybe this is the year I quit telling myself I’ll get to it later, I’ll do it tomorrow, I’ll go next week. I will just take Time by the hand and ask it to walk fruitfully, graciously, and carefully with me through each day, doing what needs to be done and what I want to get done now, not later.
Here is my food for thought for you to nibble on:
- What are you most proud of accomplishing in this past year? It doesn’t have to be about doing, being can be just as important.
- What are you bringing into the beautiful fiery Year of the Horse, that still feels unfinished and your heart whispers, “This is the year.”
- What dream is waiting for you to step into it this year?
Listen from your heart and discern what is worthy of your time and energy in this coming year.
Perhaps you can find something to represent your journey through 2026 and place it in a spot you walk past often or see every day. It could be a beautiful stone or crystal, a sculpture or a bowl, maybe you paint or have a painting to hang where it will remind you that each day is a glorious opportunity to live fully, embodying all you are as your truth..
It is a year of new beginnings, a ‘1’ year that invites you to choose yourself as the starting point. It is the year of the Horse, one of movement, momentum, and freedom carrying a wild honesty that refuses to just sit still, stagnate.
The ‘1’ Year whispers begin, the Horse says move. This is the time to live with vitality, to move forward even when the path is unclear, and trust your own instincts all the way. #YouMatter Let this be the year you begin anew, on your own terms.
May your year unfold in love and beauty even as you honor the call to begin, allowing courage, grace, and trust to guide your steps.
