Taking a “Me” break, Settling into a Creative Flow: Happy Mother’s Day

 Settling into a Creative Flow

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in my own thoughts and all that I am “supposed” to be doing, going round and round in busy circles, that I find it difficult to think, I get distracted easily and I get down on my own self for “not getting it right”. Have you been there, done that? Does this sound familiar?

I know some of my messages these past few weeks have been a bit raw and exposed some dark corners in my world, but as I write to you this week, I have just spent the most glorious day, unplanned. I had no roadmap, no destination in mind, no goal to reach at the end of it.

The morning started with a cool breeze drifting through the window and the sound of quail calling their little “buttons” across the front yard. They couldn’t have been much more than 2-3” tall and scurried right along after their mother. Cactus wrens and jays screeched from their perches in the mesquite and the saguaros.

Still in my jammies, I strolled out into the back yard and sat in the stillness that lives at this house. Underlying all the chattering winged ones flitting about, the water falling off the stack of rocks into the pond, was a familiar and deep buzzzzzzzzing. I wanted to record it and then I wondered if a hive was nearby. The ever-present cooing of the doves takes me right back to Granny’s porch in Fort Scott, Kansas.

The desert is blooming this week and yellow is the color of the season. The Palo Verde are covered in bright yellow blossoms and the bees are in heaven. The brittlesbush adds its own shade of yellow as does the creosote bush. Yellow on yellow reminding me of my mother, her favorite color was yellow. She would have loved a bouquet of desert marigolds (Happy Mother’s Day mom).

The backyard is for the softer side of time, nothing back here is pokey or thorny (unless you climb up in a Palo Verde whose branches have thorns). The hummingbirds love the red flowers of the aloe vera and the pinker red of the Apache Sunset Hummingbird Mint or the deep reds of the Ocotillo out in front. A bright-eyed roadrunner popped up on the west gate and considered a trip to the pond for a drink or a dip until it saw there were people watching. Away it went before I could unlock the screen on my camera for a quick pix.

So much for my morning of leisure still in jammies and sharing the wonder and beauty of a desert morning with my friend Fi. We headed off to lunch, trying a new place she hadn’t been to before. Full to the brim with yummy Chinese food, instead of coming back to the house, Fiona asked about driving ‘til Pima road ended into Cave Creek road. Off we took and then she made an unexpected right turn onto Dynamite towards the McDowells and we headed into a cloudless, hazy blue afternoon.

Dynamite turned into Rio Verde when we weren’t looking and when it ended, we were given the choice of left or right not having a clue what lie in either direction. Left it was. We followed the signs to Needle Rock Recreation Area and discovered we could access the Verde River from there. Lots of families picnicking and playing in the water. Joy abounded in that little dirt parking lot at the end of a dirt road that led into a wash ripe for the 4-wheelers.

We decided we would come on a weekday next time she visited, early in the morning to try to beat the bustling families and kids and introduce ourselves to the river. What a divinely gifted day, unplanned, with no direction and an awesome destination.

When is the last time you just hopped in your car and took off? Or just took a day off and lounged in your jammies drinking your beverage of choice?  We ended our magnificent day with a wonderful movie and today, as I sit here alone in the quiet of my sacred sanctuary and write to you all, I am seeing all over again the magic and wonder that this place holds for me and my family, and I hope for the families that visit when we can’t be here.

This is my week to settle into my creative soul and experience new and exciting discoveries as the colors and words and symbols flow out into the magic a sacred, creative practice. Remembering me, intentionally.

I hope you will gift yourself some “me” time this spring and look within the sacred sanctuary of your world for the peace and beauty that lies there in the center of your heart.

May you all share a blessed Mother’s Day with your beloveds and listen for the whisper of wings flitting about on a Spring day.
