The Path Ahead

The Path Ahead

The Path Ahead

It isn’t always the straight and narrow that gets you to your destination. If you have fallen off your goal path, or missed the path to your dream all together, why not give yourself permission to walk a wider, winding one? It may not be the fastest way to get to your destination, but the journey will be more intriguing, perhaps challenging and most of all, adventurous and creative along the way. It is as important to enjoy the journey as it is to take it, one of my teachers reminded me this weekend.

Spring is sneaking up on us and I for one am looking forward to the magic that unfolds with each leaf, each blossom and all the flowers that cover the hillsides and pop out of cracks in the sidewalk. Is life renewing itself all around you? Or if you are on the other side of the world from me, beginning the journey for a good winters sleep?

Nature holds the most beautiful messages and “pops” them up right under our noses all year round, but most vibrantly in the Spring and Fall. Each new sprout reminds me that even from the dark, underground, out of the cold, thawing ground, from the deep recesses of the Earth’s soul… new life is emerging, new beauty springs forth to remind us to get up and get going.

You may have heard the quote (and I don’t remember who said it), “if you aren’t growing, you’re dying?” I turned it around in my head when I read it last night and “heard,” if you aren’t learning, you are dying. Funny how those little nuances can change the direction of our thoughts.

I’ve spent the past week immersed in classes online. Never did I ever imagine myself sitting at my computer 8-10 hours a day for days on end, all in the name of learning something. What an experience and yes, I did learn a lot, but it also brought me to the brink of overwhelm.

Learning is a life process and when pushed beyond our scope of retaining, feels like madness creeping in. It crawls up on my shoulder and sits there cackling, “What in the world are you doing? You could be wandering around a hillside taking pictures of wildflowers, playing with the kids, chatting with friends and you’re what? Glued to the “new” boob tube, all in the name of learning? Learning for what? At your age don’t you just want to relax?”

Wow, did Overwhelm bring home a nasty friend to visit. It took me a couple of days to get my footing back, to remember why I want to learn more about this writing gig and being visible in our growing virtual world. I remembered I love creativity; I love the inspiration that spurs my fingers across the keyboard and the brush across the paper. I am remembering why I started these Friday morsels… I want to keep my light burning, my candle lit, so to speak.

I may not be able to fend off an army or bring water to the thirsting world, but I can be a light in my little corner of it. I can be a positive voice in a sea of negativity, a moment of “you are not alone” messaging out across the ethers, reflecting back to me through the eyes of those seeing it, catching it, and passing it along.

This early morning as I write, my office door is open to the fresh, cool air and the voice of a bird in the neighboring tree. Sure, the cars interrupt my reverie as they whiz past but this morning, I am choosing to hear them as thunder and wind, rather than motorcycles and madness. There goes a lawnmower, hmmmm… what else might that be? A giant bee? God bless the bees as they stretch their wings and prepare for a busy Spring.

May the blossoms bring you joy or the coloring up leaves brighten your day. May you discover in your world, new ways to play, to enjoy your life and to learn something new, just for you or maybe to pass along to all of us.

Guilty as charged, a lifelong learner.

Blessings and fresh air to your all.
