The Power of Perspective

5.2.25meme the power of perspective

What you focus on expands right in front of you. That’s why it becomes so important to choose your points of view wisely.

For the last several weeks, I have gone back and forth with myself about how I am choosing to “see” my world and the gifts and challenges it has presented me over the past year.

We passed the years anniversary of my husband’s cancer diagnosis, and the gift is that we still have him, and he is doing quite well after surgery and chemo. We have high hopes for his continued healing and are filled with gratitude for all the prayers and support we have received.

I survived a scary heart episode, and the doctors are optimistic that with a cardiac ablation, rhythm will be restored and I can get off the meds that have me feeling like I am in lala land, except for occasional moments of inspiration and energy. I think I am catching up on the last years many sleepless nights as I sleep the morning away and give myself permission to take a nap when I feel like it.

We are coming up on the 20th anniversary of our sons passing, and it still feels like yesterday most of the time. Not so many tears, lots of sweet memories and the occasional conversation with him that always leaves me in awe of the wisdom he shares from the other side.

Our perspectives shape our reality. The way we choose to view each situation has the power to either limit us or liberate us. We can’t always change our circumstances, but we can shift how we see them and for sure, how we meet them, head on or hiding.

Sometimes that shift is subtle, as it has been over this past year and certainly over the past 20 years. I have found myself looking for meaning more often than blame, concentrating on the lesson and growth instead of the regrets, and looking forward at the possibilities that lie ahead rather than being stuck in the quagmire of fear.

At other times, my point of view is as radical as choosing to bless these challenges rather than curse them, knowing that even the struggle carries seeds of wisdom I am supposed to unearth.

My perspective is not about me pretending that everything is okay. It’s about me being willing to look again, to look back with softer eyes, with a wider understanding of the events, and with a heart that’s open to learning from them rather than burying them all.

This inner recalibration happens quietly for me, most of the time. It is a sudden knowing that comes over me; a pause before reacting, a breath before judging. I find myself choosing compassion in place of criticism.

The gifts I receive as I shift my point of view, also change my experience of the world. I am choosing to carry a positive perspective forward and view my world through the lens of optimism as sacred anniversaries come and go and we all keep on keepin’ on.

May you all find the wisdom and gifts waiting behind the veils of your perspective.
