Have you met him?
Timekiller, such a sneaky good enemy. He is one of the most deceptively charming companions I’ve encountered in my travels. He doesn’t barge in with force and a boisterous voice like some of his cousins. He tiptoes in dressed politely as busy work, insignificant distractions, or endless scrolling down rabbit holes. I can hear him whispering, “Just a minute,” and suddenly realize hours have vanished.
Well, that’s what happened this week. It was Wednesday afternoon and I was finally done with all the stuff at the house here in AZ and thought, I’ll get a jump start on packing up as we head home Saturday morning. Started a load of laundry, cleaned out most of the refrigerator and then hubby wanted to go to dinner. OK, that’s cool and three hours later we come home. Yawn. It’s dark, it’s bedtime, it can all wait ‘til tomorrow.
Then I wake up Thursday morning with a zoom appointment, a writing class, a late lunch date and a date to meet a friend up the hill to watch the sunset. Yummy lunch under a cloudy sky that I think will make for the kind of sunsets AZ is known for. Just before dusk, I head up the hill to meet my friend and watch the sun drop through the saguaros and palo verde. Caught a glimpse of gray clouded silvery light trying to break through the dusky sky but no rays, no color, no sun.
I head home and realize at 6:30 pm that I had not written my weekly newsletter to you all. Yikes!
It will get to you as promised, perhaps a bit later than usual as my VA will have to format it so ya’ all can read it and voila.
Timekiller whispered in my ears, “Good job in spite of me. Maybe you should learn better clock and calendar watching skills,” he snickered.
“And maybe you should take a vacation and go do something productive with yourself instead of derailing my day.”
It never pays to argue with a good enemy, they love it and will most likely show up again real soon. I have to ask myself, what is the takeaway from his dance with me this week? As always, awareness is a real key. It isn’t just about the clock and calendar, it is about how I play with or ignore time.
A much needed reminder that I control my own time even when it feels like it has been manipulated or managed by someone or something else.
Bye for now and as always, Happy Trails.
