Underestimate Necessity and Overestimate Distraction

Underestimate Necessity and Overestimate DistractionDo questions ever pop into your head that leave you scratching it and wondering, hmmmm? I got one this week – a truth bomb delivered in the dark of night. Underestimate necessity and overestimate distraction

Wrote it down. Woke up in the morning, read it and just thought to myself, hmmmm… I’ll just take it to the paper and see what writes itself out.

All kinds of wild ideas popped into mind…rabbit holes of distractions like whack- a-mole popped up in every direction to derail a deeper dive into this random sentence I was gifted in the middle of the night.

What broke through the “noise” was how often I underestimate necessity. “Okay,” I asked myself. “Just what the heck does that mean?”

Immediately I could see how often the essential tasks, the things that really matter, those that move me forward in this work and life, my creative expression and spiritual journey, get left behind when I let the “mad moles” out of their holes and chase them all around the proverbial wheel.

In other words, I get sidelined. I tell myself I will get back to it, I’ve still got time, it isn’t that urgent in this moment… as I finish another word puzzle and whack another mole.

With it so “right in my face” as I write this, I begin to see them, you know, the distractions. Now I think I will make a list of all those sneaky little time-suckers that grab my attention, the ones I have overestimated, frankly, because I realized they were easier and more fun. Have you tried chasing moles?

Then the brain engages again, and I wonder what would happen if I flipped those thoughts I just wrote and put a spotlight on my necessities. What if I chose me first?

Don’t get me wrong, distractions can be a necessity when my world seems out of control, and I need a minute. As with all things, I have to find that balance that serves me, my path and my purpose, and keeps me moving forward, living intentionally and not just reactionally.

Here is the plan. Perhaps you would like to join me this week…

Instead of binge watching another Netflix series, I am going to sit in that same comfy chair with my trusty journal and explore my thoughts. Instead of perusing mindless memes and reels, I am going to take those same moments of time and move into the words that showed up in the journaling I just did, ground myself, and connect with the Divine for a conscious conversation.

With me? Let’s write! I’ll share if you will…https://www.facebook.com/vickildobbsauthor

Remember to enjoy the lighter side of life without letting it overshadow your true purpose. We can conquer our necessities with the same fervor we chase our favorite distractions.

Let creativity be your outlet, your spiritual purpose your compass, and humor your guide along the way…AND don’t underestimate YOU!

Write on my friends…
