When the Wind Whispers, Will You Listen?

Spring has Sprung, Here comes the Sun

There is a Proverb of unknown origin, that is attributed to Native Americans. Perhaps this is the language of the Wind?

“Listen to the wind, it talks.
Listen to the silence, it speaks.
Listen to your heart, it knows.”

A Buddhist seeing the new flowers on a cherry tree, might share with you that “as the blossoms emerge from the darkness of winter, so too can enlightenment emerge from the darkness of ignorance.”

Spring offers us such a bountiful opportunity to re-awaken ourselves physically and metaphorically. Warmer days and sunshine beckon us outdoors while the rains have freshened the air and cleansed the earth. This past week it brought the wind billowing through the trees littering the orchards in a snowlike blanket of blossoms and blowing down the last of the avocados from the tallest branches of our tree (guacamole was made fresh for our Easter treats).

I love the wind. It beckons me out to watch the dance of the leaves and the sway of the trees reminding me of the importance of moving, something I tend to forget in the colder, wet days of winter. Moving has been a difficult routine to re-find since our actual move to a new home, now over three years ago. Do I have resistance? Yes! Does it hurt? Yes! Bless my knees.

I ventured out into the wind the other evening when I was in dire need of fresh air and the soothing touch of the wind on my face. Taxes you know, are not my favorite time of the year, so this year, for a change, I am working slower rather than last minute. I am allowing myself time, even days between rows of numbers, to do things like walk with the wind.

A hawk gifted me it’s presence that evening, always a sign for me that “I am on the right road.” After a short and windy walkabout, I dragged out a lawn chair and took a seat to enjoy the last rays of light fading in the west. The wind slowed and as I inhaled the scent of wisteria blooming nearby, I began to hear the whispers on the wind.

“What are you waiting for?” I heard, and turned to see who was talking to me.

The wind kicked up, a bit chillier with the fading light. I thought about heading inside and getting back to work when I heard the neighbors peacock announce the setting of the sun. Someday I am going to meander in the direction of that now familiar sound and see if I can capture a glimpse of that bird. I have heard that in some cultures, the call of a peacock at sunset is considered a powerful sign of transformation, resurrection, and awakening.

Who, me?” I think to myself and hear that voice a bit louder now, “What are you waiting for?”

Don’t ya’ all just love a proverbial kick in the behind when you least expect it? Here the wind was telling me to get up and get moving, to wake up and pay attention, to get ready for change, and most importantly, to emerge… the peacock reminding me that with Spring comes change, transformation and awakening.

Just as this season celebrates new beginnings, growth and rebirth, it is also a reminder of the beauty of impermanence. Like the cherry blossoms are seen as powerful symbols of hope and renewal, may Spring gift you with the power of your own inner beauty as it springs forth with the growing light and nurtures the seeds you have planted along the way.

Take a few moments the next time you feel the gentle touch of the wind on your cheek, turn your ear to that soft breeze and listen for the whispers in the wind.

May this Spring bring you a bounty of love, laughter, joy, wisdom, hope, and endless beauty. Here’s to puffy, white cloud-filled skies, wildflowers, and gentle breezes along the way.

Many blessings..
