Who’s Your Muse?

Who’s Your Muse?Creativity is a fire that burns differently in each heart, often fueled by inspirations as varied as the stars in a night sky.

For some, there is a muse that they have become familiar with, and in the presence of that unique person, place, or thing, the spark of imagination sets ideas afire.

For others, the muse may be an abstract concept, a feeling, or even a state of mind that whispers wonders into the recesses of their consciousness.

Strange as it may seem, lately my muse has been waving at me through the words on a big screen that hangs on the wall of our living room. Inspiration comes from Meredith on Grays Anatomy or a sentence captured from the background narrator, an old western homestead backlit by the morning sky, even a single horse galloping across the verdant green grasses of a foothill scene at sunset.

I have so many notes in my phone scribbled with the help of closed captioning, freeze, and rewind. Here is a quote from Marshal on the TV show In Plain Sight: “…and therefore, the artist role becomes not to illustrate the fantastic but rather to illuminate the obvious.”

Imagine you are a painter standing before a blank canvas, palette in hand, searching for that initial stroke of color, of inspiration. Where is the muse to be found?

Perhaps in the vibrant hues of a spring sunset after the rain or in the delicate lines of a flower, even in the chaotic beauty of a cityscape. Each stroke of your brush, like each word written by this author, becomes an expression of what your artistic muse has evoked within you. Your work becomes a translation of that raw inspiration into tangible art, aka your sacred creativity.

Intentional, or what I often refer to as sacred creativity, is a moment-by-moment opportunity to connect with your divine source and the muses who surround and support your journey.

Often, for me, it is in those in-between moments that creativity ignites my imagination. When I sit down with a plan, but nothing happens. I turn to other distractions and move into patience. In between distraction and a blank page, there is just enough space for my muses to sneak in and whisper in my ears, tease my pen, or spill paint across the canvas.

It is in-between my intent and my actions that my muses spark inspiration and fuel the creative dream that comes alive in my heart. The fuel, the spread of words across paper or color on canvas. They encourage me to take plums and add apricots to the mixture making it a plucot jam.

Sometimes it is just a nudge to get up and go outside, cut tiny roses growing wild along the fence, and with the help of the cottonwood branches, makes a bouquet that sweetens the air in my office.

As a writer, I find my muses in the world around me; in a fleeting conversation overheard at the grocery store, or a forgotten memory that resurfaces in a quiet moment in the face of a faded photograph found leafing through an old album.

Words woven into the texture of my emotions form the fabric of my human experience as my writing muses weave narratives from the threads of my life, turning the ordinary in to the sacred with every word spelled out across these blank pages.

Ultimately, your muses are deeply personal forces and are not always external ones. Remember that you hold the key to unlock your own reservoir of creativity that flows through the depths of your thoughts and emotions.

Draw strength from introspection. Turn inward when you feel the pull to explore the labyrinthine corridors of your very body, mind, heart, and soul.

Bottom-line… you have to call them in, pick up pen or brush, rose clippers or the camera and follow the “call” of your creative spirit.

Here are some tidbits to munch on or journal with, in the coming days:

Who or what ignites your creative spark?

What do you do when intention bumps up against distraction?

How do you open the door to your creative muses and invite them to join you in your adventures?

May you invite in and become intimate with, the creative muses in your life as you ignite soul desires with your hearts fire.
