The Great Office Weed-Out: Spring Cleaning Creatively

The Great Office Weed-Out: Spring Cleaning Creatively I’ve been weeding my office this spring. Pulling the weeds of excess papers out of corners and piles, plucking those pesky sticky notes off all the surfaces around my desk; my computer screens, the back of the computer, the window, the top of my desk and the bookshelf behind it… it’s like fall and I am raking leaves out of my workspace. My recycle bin overfloweth with paper.

I have so many projects poking me to “get off the shelf,” that I put on my gardening gloves, grabbed my metaphorical pruning shears and embarked on a journey of office weeding. No, it is not the kind that involves dandelions and crabgrass. I’m talking about sprucing up my workspace to make room for my creativity to bloom this year.

And no, this is not some weird new farming plan (not planting cornstalks in the corners or tomatoes on the bookshelves, though I do love tomatoes). I’m talking about weeding out all those pesky piles that have been growing around me and burying my creativity faster than a PowerPoint presentation on building a website.

First into the wheelbarrow – clutter. Yep! All those printed pages piled higher than the printer, that never found a folder to hide in. Then there are all the notebooks with pages of notes never looked at again after the class was over. I’m saving them, why?

Now on to the ink pens – I love new ink pens like I love new socks. One can never have too many, but they have been multiplying faster than bunnies on a sunny spring day. Maybe that cool coffee cup (I don’t drink coffee) could corral the bunch of ‘em in one place.

That little project not only cleared the deck and surrounding surfaces (found my mouse pad), it cleared the path to more creative flow. But wait, there’s more. How about weeding out distractions in my quest for a “creativity-friendly” space?

It’s time to say goodbye to the incessant pings of email notifications (Off-check). Yeah, but the lure of social media is still lurking just a click away… OK, a new sticky note on the corner of the flatscreen… NO!

A nifty reminder that it’s time for me to reclaim my focus and channel my creativity to stave off the urge to check in on FB or IG.

It is time for me to inject a healthy dose of inspiration into this newly tidied up workspace. Turn on the YouTube To Write with MUSIC (no videos) and dust off my crystals. I have added a note to self on my office altar – it simply says:

“Celebrate Every Step

A gentle reminder that each moment spent in sacred creativity is a moment to celebrate.

It is spring, the office door is open to let the fresh air in as the cherry trees blossom and Darby lies in watch for the lizards warming themselves on the stones outside. The cottonwoods are almost fully leaved out and the oaks are not far behind.

If creativity has been avoiding you, invite it back into your space. Close your eyes and “see” the new book in your hands, that painting on the wall, the tomatoes ripening outside your window, or that new recipe coming out of the oven. Take a deep breath and say to yourself, out loud, today is the day creativity comes back to play! And seeing it so, so will it be.

Have a great time weeding your way back to your creative spirit and your sacred space where inspiration waits for you to collaborate.

May your creativity blossom with the colors of spring.
